Dirt & Digits

5 minutes of math.
Outside. Zero prep.

One free email every Tuesday with a play-based preschool math activity you can do the second you step outside — no worksheets, no planning, no supplies to buy.

How it works

If you can open your back door, you can do this.

1

Get the Tuesday email

One activity lands in your inbox each week — written so you can read it in 30 seconds while the toddler puts on shoes.

2

Step outside

Backyard, park, sidewalk, trail — anywhere counts. No special destination, no supplies bag.

3

Do 5 minutes of math

Count sticks. Compare pinecones. Hunt leaf shapes. Real early-math skills, built into play, done before snack.

The first 4 weeks

Your launch arc builds real math sense in order — each week stacks on the last.

Week 1

Counting

Count the sticks. One-to-one correspondence with the world's most available manipulative — the ground is full of them.

Week 2

More-or-less

Pinecone comparisons. Which pile has more? Which has fewer? Early number sense, zero counting required.

Week 3

Shapes & patterns

The leaf shape hunt. Find the round ones, the pointy ones, the ones that match — geometry hiding in the trees.

Week 4

Measuring

How many footsteps long is the stick? Non-standard measurement with the only ruler a toddler will use: their own feet.

Why it works

Dirt & Digits is written by Monique — a former early-childhood educator, a math major, and a homeschooling mom to a toddler boy. Every activity is built on how little brains actually learn math: through their hands, their bodies, and the real world — not through worksheets.

Five minutes a day is enough, because it happens every day. Small, consistent, and outside — that's the whole method.
